A New Branch of Shanghai Children’s Library with a specially designed Telelift System
Shanghai Children’s library, China

The Shanghai Children’s Library opened a new branch in the city’s Putuo district. Adjacent to Suzhou Creek and Changfeng Park, it is situated within a sizeable urban park surrounded by greenery and ponds. The new library, which has a total collection of about 530,000 books and a space of 16,000 square meters, is the largest provincial children’s library in China.
The library is designed for kids between four and sixteen. Each floor of the building has different catalogues of books and serves distinctive needs, where children can browse through topics of interest or expand their knowledge base. In the future, the library will hold themed activities as well, including exhibitions and reading festivals.

For library logistics, the library relies on an integrated library solution from Telelift in cooperation with bibliotheca, which makes it possible to optimize return and sorting processes in large public or academic libraries over several floors.
A total of 3 book return machines, 34 UniSortCars and six UniSafeCars are used.

“We designed the library to show the Automated return and sorting systems, along with automated transport to the public, so that children can see the transport trajectory of the UniSortCars when they get on and off the lift”commented Yan Laiyun, the project’s lead designer.

The color of the trolleys was specially customized to the library’s needs in order to blend in harmoniously with the library’s color concept and thus provide users with a comfortable area for reading and studying.

Children and teenagers in Shanghai now consider the Shanghai Children’s Library to be their “new area for reading,” and we are happy to be able to support such a great library.
