Automated media transport in the central archive library
German National Library Frankfurt a.M.
The German National Library with its locations in Leipzig (formerly “Deutsche Bücherei”) and Frankfurt a.M. is the central archive library and the national bibliographic center of the Federal Republic of Germany. Located in Leipzig since 1913 and in Frankfurt a.M. since 1946, the National Library’s mission is to collect, develop and bibliographically record all German-language literature and music.
With the reunification of Germany in 1990, the two libraries in Leipzig and Frankfurt were merged. With 47,000 m² of main floor space and 30,000 m² of storage space for approximately 45 million books, magazines, CDs, sheet music and records, the significance of the German National Library in Frankfurt a.M. is clear to see.
In 1997, Telelift installed a book transport system in Frankfurt for book sorting and automated media transport. The system is a combination of a modern rail system and a classic belt conveyor system. After 22 years of operation, the library decided to modernize the control components of the system. A state-of-the-art control system was integrated into the system.
The modernization will ensure that the system will continue to operate successfully for many years to come.
